Heat
Kills. In Berlin. This just in from my friend, H.
A workman
approximately 50 years old was found dead lying half-in and half-out of the
elevator on the top floor of H’s building in Charlottenburg. (Not the building pictured.) The workman had been removing shelving from an apartment
on the 5th floor, the top floor of the building, below the roof, and stacking it in
the elevator. He would then ride the
elevator down to the first floor, unload the shelving, carry it down a short flight
of stairs to the front door, and stack the shelving there. Then he would hurry back up the short flight, ride
the elevator up to the 5th floor again and continue with his
work. H determines that the workman died
between 2 pm, when her visitor used the elevator to leave the building, and 3
pm, when her DHL deliveryman couldn’t call the elevator.
The outside
temperature in Berlin hit 34°c. today between 2 and 3 pm. H estimates it could easily have been 40°c.
in the 5th floor apartment.
Tragic.
Keep hydrated. Don’t run.
Heat kills.

Really sad. Poor family. I sent home the workmen on my building site early on Thursday. It was entirely too hot to be safe for anybody to work in the weather. Its just not worth it. ;(
