This morning, as I was making breakfast, I tuned into the middle of a Morning Edition interview on NPR with Jason Isbell, someone I had never heard of. He’s a successful country and western musician from Muscle Shoals, Alabama; a four-time Grammy winner; and a recovering alcoholic. He talked about the closing of small, independent music venues all over the U.S. and the hardship and heartache that brings to performers and club owners alike. But there was something he said that confirmed what I've been thinking about. Isbell predicted, “This pandemic is going to be really hard on addicts everywhere.” I found that particularly relevant to two recent news items. The first is the jobs report.
