On January 31, 2020, I published Everything is Working (Im)perfectly . Nearly four and a half years have passed since I wrote that post, which explored what I think is the principal reason the U.S. is politically dysfunctional and what, if anything, can be done to fix that dysfunction. I recently finished reading Tyranny of the Minority , published late last year by Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt, co-authors of How Democracies Die. It gives me no joy to say that their book confirms my amateur’s analysis and conclusions. I am indebted to them for their description of the historical context within which the Constitution was written, and that context enabled me to put some historical flesh onto the analytical bones of my prior post and update my thinking.
